A Stolen Childhood: Why North West’s Lip Piercings Are a Tragedy, Not a Trend

North West lip piercings ? I already know that someone’s response is going to be like, “She is doing the best she can for a 13-year-old,” but my argument is going to be that she shouldn’t be doing any of this because she is a literal child. If I was that age with all the money in the entire world and parents who didn’t give a single damn, I probably would have been behaving exactly like North West. But unfortunately for me, my parents actually cared and gave me restrictions to protect me.

The internet is once again tearing into Kim Kardashian’s parenting, and this time, the controversy erupted after North stepped out at the Vetements menswear spring-summer 2027 show on June 26 during Paris Fashion Week. The 13-year-old wasn’t just sporting her signature bright blue hair done up in pigtails. She showed off a full set of angel lip piercings, alongside metal pushed through her cheekbones and across the bridge of her nose. This is on top of the dermal piercings on her hands she debuted last September, completing an intensely edgy look that included a long-sleeved black Vetements shirt, a spiked collar, a black pleated mini skirt, sheer black tights, and heavy black boots covered in chains.

It is one of her most mature aesthetics yet.

Naturally, Kim pushed back against the critics. She went on Alex Cooper’s Call Her Daddy podcast and basically said, “Babe, if you want blue hair, it is what it is… I would never take that creative away from her”. She also tried to dispel the idea that she just tries to be her daughter’s bestie and lets her get away with everything, claiming on sister Khloe’s podcast that North actually has a lot of rules. Self-expression is simply the one area where she gets total freedom. Honestly, I think giving a kid creative freedom is great… actually, no, letting a middle schooler dress like a 30-year-old rockstar for a global media circus isn’t creative freedom; it is the forced launch of a celebrity career. North isn’t just playing dress-up; the teen rapper released her debut EP N0rth4Evr in May, featuring a track with her dad where she sings about the piercings on her hand, getting banned from school, and having “no friends, just fans”. She is even set to embark on a 14-date tour alongside Molly Santana.

This is a full-blown career, not a childhood.

This is exactly where everyone suddenly remembers Kanye West. Across TikTok, Twitter, and Instagram, people are pointing out that Kanye spent years warning everyone that this exact scenario would happen. Everyone called him controlling and crazy when he went on those public rants about Kim’s parenting style, but look where we are now. Remember when he was furious about North wearing full makeup and singing she’s in love with an emo girl on TikTok? He publicly stated that he was not going to allow his daughter to be used by TikTok or Disney, emphasizing that as her father, he should have a say. He even complained about custody dynamics in society, noting how the system always leans toward the mom. And now, we see Kim’s own styling team actively accompanying North to these high-profile events. Whenever Kim catches flack for this, she just uses it as an opportunity to emphasize North’s individuality rather than taking any real accountability or correcting course.

Some supporters argue that the internet is just overreacting. They claim that North has always been artistic, and that alternative fashion, facial piercings, and bold self-expression are incredibly common among Gen Z and Gen Alpha today. Because she is the daughter of Kim and Kanye, fashion has always been part of her world. So, maybe we just need to give them a little grace… actually, no, I completely reject that. There is a massive difference between a kid experimenting with clothes in her bedroom and a 13-year-old being thrust into a global media frenzy.

The video clips from Paris are deeply uncomfortable to watch. North looks visibly overwhelmed by the sheer amount of people and cameras surrounding her. You have paparazzi shouting questions at a child who has no words, and even worse, grown men coming up to hug her. Why is a 13-year-old regularly operating in spaces dominated almost entirely by adults? Seeing grown men hug a child while acting like they are super fans is straight-up weirdo behavior. There are grown adults in comment sections justifying following a literal child on Instagram, claiming they just want to praise her like a proud aunt or uncle. She doesn’t know you exist. Idolizing a celebrity is one thing, but idolizing a middle schooler?

Unfollow the child.

Is anyone honestly surprised that the woman whose mother sold her out for attention is now doing the exact same thing to her own daughter?
